Arshdeep pushes USA back
Arshdeep Singh struck twice in the first over of the match, reducing USA to 3/2. Shayan Jahangir was pinned lbw on the first ball of the match followed by Andries Gous’ departure for 2 on the last ball of the same over.
USA kept fighting
Standing up for the spirited cricket they have played in this competition, USA fought back to post a competitive total in New York. Their batters played plenty of dots but made up for it with timely sixes. USA struck six maximums, the joint-most at this venue in this World Cup.
Arshdeep’s record spell
When USA seemed set to put 120-130 on the board, Arshdeep snapped two more wickets in his remaining two overs. He finished with figures of 4/9, the best for India in a T20 World Cup fixture. As a result, USA were restricted to 110. Although competitive, it is the lowest score in a completed 20-over innings against India.
Aaron Jones, USA’s stand-in captain said after the game that they were 10-15 runs short.
India’s jittery start
The USA bowlers understood the conditions and bowled accordingly to keep India at bay. Saurabh Natrevalkar dismissed Virat Kohli for a golden duck. The top three scored 21 runs put together (18 from Rishabh Pant alone). Complying with the conditions, USA didn’t bowl a single over of spin and the pacers bowled with discipline for an extended period.
The Men in Blue were 67/3 in 14 overs, with the asking rate hovering around 7.3.
Surya, Dube get it done
Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube forged an unbeaten 67-run stand off 65 balls to see India through with seven wickets and 10 balls to spare. The first 35 runs of their partnership came in 45 deliveries.
With 35 needed off 30 balls, USA were penalized five runs as they failed to begin a new over within 60 seconds for the third time in the innings. This released the pressure and both Surya and Dube cruised India to the target and the Super 8 qualification. The last 32 runs of the partnership took only 20 balls.
Surya finished with 50 off 49 balls while Dube contributed 31 from 35 deliveries.
