Team management in Sri Lanka left in lurch as BCCI official updates about new Test additions

The classic case of miscommunication has never been highlighted more

Confusion and lack of communication is not a new thing in Indian Cricket. It was well on show as recently as earlier this month when the team management’s request for a replacement for Shubman Gill fell on deaf ears as the selection committee refused to send Prithvi Shaw to England.

Now, in another weird circumstance, the selections of Prithvi Shaw, Devdutt Padikkal, and Suryakumar Yadav for the England tour have already been declared by an unnamed BCCI official, leaving the team management in Sri Lanka is in a complete lurch.

"Yes, Prithvi and Surya are flying to the UK from Sri Lanka. Jayant was also supposed to go but there has been some change in plans due to quarantine requirements. Jayant is now not going. Both players will have a bubble to bubble transfer from Colombo to London. Whether they will fly in the middle of the T20 Internationals (Shaw and Suryakumar are part of the team in Sri Lanka) or post that is being worked out," a senior BCCI official told PTI.

"But yes, these three are our replacement players for the Test series in England. They might just leave after the three T20 Internationals (vs Sri Lanka) but we will get a confirmation in another three days.”

This statement came yesterday, with the confusion sliding in if the three players would be a part of the Sri Lanka T20I series. When Shikhar Dhawan, India’s skipper for the T20 series, was asked the same during the pre-match press conference, the Delhite replied the team management hadn't received any communication from the board yet and they would plan the series, keeping the three players in mind.

"Nothing has been informed to us yet. We will get to know once there is any update from the BCCI management. So in that case, there is no need to change our strategy for the (Sri Lanka T20I) series," Dhawan told a virtual press conference on Saturday.

The classic case of miscommunication has never been highlighted more. Shubman Gill has already returned home from England but there is no statement from the board itself. While one would expect a more professional approach in such things, accountability is not something you would associate the richest cricket board in the world with.
